How to Use Follow-Up Questions in Squarespace Forms

If you’ve ever used Squarespace contact forms, you know that every visitor sees the same questions, even if some of them don’t apply. That changes now! With Squarespace’s new follow-up questions feature, you can show custom questions based on what a visitor selects.

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to set up follow-up questions in Squarespace forms so you can create smarter, more dynamic forms for your website.

Why Use Follow-Up Questions?

Before this update, if you needed extra details for only certain visitors, you had to ask all users the same questions, even if they weren’t relevant.

Now, with follow-up questions, you can:

Show additional fields only when needed
Keep your forms clean and user-friendly
Get more specific information without overwhelming users

For example:

  • If a visitor selects Chicago from a "Which location?" dropdown, a follow-up question could ask "Which building?"

  • If someone selects "Yes" to needing custom work, a text field could appear asking for more details.

This keeps forms shorter while still collecting the necessary info when needed.

Step 1: Add a Contact Form to Your Page

If you don’t already have a form set up:

  1. Go to your Squarespace page editor

  2. Click Add Section → Choose Contact Form

  3. Click the Pencil Icon on the form to open Form Settings

Step 2: Setting Up a Follow-Up Question

Now, let’s make a form more dynamic by adding a follow-up question.
Note: Follow-up questions are only available within the Dropdown, Checkbox, Radio, and Survey form fields.

  1. Inside Form Settings, click Edit Form Fields

  2. Select the question field where you want to trigger a follow-up

  3. Click the three dots (…) next to an option and select "Add Follow-Up Question"

  4. Type your follow-up question

  5. Choose the question type (Dropdown, Checkbox, Radio, etc.)

  6. Add relevant answer choices

💡 Example:

  • A dropdown menu asks "Which city are you in?"

  • If Chicago is selected, a follow-up question appears: "Which building?"

  • Visitors choosing New York or Los Angeles don’t see this question.

This makes forms much cleaner while still collecting extra details when needed.

Step 3: Testing Your Follow-Up Question

Once set up, you can test your form by selecting different options.

✔ Does the follow-up question appear only when expected?
✔ Does it disappear when switching to another answer?
✔ Are the options clear and easy to use?

If everything looks good, click Save to apply your changes!

Step 4: Additional Ways to Use Follow-Up Questions

Follow-up questions aren’t just for dropdowns! They also work with:

Checkboxes – Show an extra question if a certain box is checked
Radio Buttons – Reveal a follow-up based on selected choices
Survey Questions – Ask more details based on ratings

The follow-up questions can be any type of form field, so you have full control over how your form collects information.

Final Thoughts

Squarespace’s follow-up questions feature makes forms smarter, reducing clutter while gathering the right details from the right users. This update is perfect for businesses, service providers, and anyone looking to improve form usability.
